Katherine Hernandez is Fi2W’s New Food Reporting Fellow

We’re pleased to announce the selection of our new Food Reporting Fellow, Katherine Hernandez.

Katherine is an Afro-Latina writer and educator whose pursuit of learning about food began in her early teens.  In culinary school she won a scholarship from the Hispanic Association for Colleges and Universities to develop a culinary portfolio alongside an award-winning pastry chef.  She also studied food history, culture, and media in Italy. She is the founder of Mirepoix Journal, a bi-annual journal publishing stories about international comfort food told by underrepresented writers.

Katherine recently earned a B.A. in food journalism through the CUNY Baccalaureate for Interdisciplinary Studies program. She is a social media intern for Saveur and a freelance writer for Harlem Focus.  Last year, she received a New York Women in Communications scholarship. She has won two awards for her fiction writing.

Von Diaz

Katherine will be mentored by Von Diaz, a former Fi2W fellow and editor of the Feet in 2 Worlds website.  Von is the author of the forthcoming culinary memoir Coconuts and Collards: Recipes and Stories from Puerto Rico to the Deep South, which explores her Puerto Rican heritage and connections to island culture.  Von is a writer, radio producer and self-taught cook who explores Puerto Rican food, culture and identity through memoir and multimedia.  Her work has been featured on NPR, American Public Media, StoryCorps, WNYC, PRI’s The World, BuzzFeed, Colorlines and Feet in 2 Worlds.

The pairing of Katherine and Von represents an exciting new phase in Fi2W fellowships in which former fellows are mentoring the next generation of immigrant journalists and preparing them to take their place in leading media organizations

Katherine was selected from participants in this year’s Feet in 2 Worlds food journalism workshop “Telling Immigrant Stories”, held in April at The New School in New York City. During the workshop journalists and culinary professionals produced stories about food and related issues for radio, podcast and multimedia.

The fellowship is sponsored by the International Association of Culinary Professionals and The Culinary Trust, whose mission is to give culinary professionals the tools and opportunities to understand and act on critical issues in the world of food.  Together, Feet in 2 Worlds and The Culinary Trust help emerging voices tell important food stories from the perspective of new Americans.
