Call for Applications: Audio and Story Development Intensive Workshop for Immigrant and Ethnic Media Journalists

cristina dc pastor

Feet in 2 Worlds Reporting Fellow Cristina DC Pastor.

Feet in 2 Worlds is offering a limited number of spaces to immigrant and ethnic media journalists in New York City at a weekend workshop focused on developing audio skills and refining story pitches. Over the course of three days, participants will gain hands-on experience in audio field recording and digital audio editing. Participants will also submit story ideas and pitches to be critiqued during the workshop.  The weekend will culminate in a story pitching session with editors from our partner media organizations.  Audio produced during the workshop will be showcased on the Feet in 2 Worlds podcast at news.feetintwoworlds.org, on our Facebook page and our Twitter feed @Fi2W.

The twin objectives of the workshop are:

  • Increase familiarity with audio for broadcast and online media.
  • Develop story concept, development and pitching skills.

The workshop will be held at The New School on June 8, 9, 10.  Attendance is free, but attendance is based on our acceptance of your application.

The workshop is open to staff or freelance immigrant and first-generation immigrant reporters and editors who work in any language and in any medium. The workshop will be conducted in English, and all reporting for Feet in 2 Worlds and our partner organizations will be in English.  The workshop will include presentations by Fi2W staff, group discussions, field recording and audio editing workshops.

Applications are due by 5 PM on Friday, May 18, 2012 and should include the following:

  • Three story ideas related to immigrants or immigration.   We are especially interested in stories focused on immigrants in New York City, the role of immigrants and immigration in the 2012 election and food in immigrant communities.
  • Your resume.
  • Samples of your work.
  • The URL of the media outlet(s) for whom you report.
