In this podcast episode Fi2W executive producer John Rudolph gets an update from Rong Xiaoqing, a reporter with the Chinese -language newspaper Sing Tao Daily, about how her newspaper is handling the story of New York City’s embattled Comptroller John Liu.
Fi2W reported early this year that Chinese-language media had a different angle on the story than the English-language press. Liu’s mayoral campaign is the subject of a federal investigation for alleged violations of campaign finance laws.
In a prior podcast, Sing Tao Daily reporter and Fi2W contributor Stella Chan reported that for months, the Chinese-language media held off on calling Liu’s troubles a “scandal,” using the word “incident” instead.
In this podcast Rong Xiaoqing takes us into the Sing Tao newsroom following the recent arrest of Liu’s campaign treasurer Jenny Hou. What had been called an incident is now being referred to as a scandal.
