‘What I Carried’ Volume Six: A Jamaican Bible and a Nepali Calendar

In this installment of “What I Carried,” immigrant journalists tell stories about religious objects immigrants use to remind them of home—one a Jamaican bible, the other a calendar from Nepal.

Christina Berthaud, a first-generation Haitian-American and a student in the Feet in 2 Worlds journalism course at The New School, interviewed her friend Shantaur—an immigrant from Trelawny, Jamaica who came to New York when she was nine years old.

Fi2W contributor and Nepali radio producer Sahadev Poudel talks with fellow Nepali immigrant Bal M. Kharel, who hangs a Nepalese calendar on his wall as a way to remain connected to the religion and culture of his home country.
