Feet in 2 Worlds is accepting applications for our 2025 Reporting Fellowship. The recipient of the fellowship will have the opportunity to develop and report a multi-part series, while being mentored and trained by the editorial staff of Feet in 2 Worlds and our network of journalist mentors.

About Feet in 2 Worlds:

Feet in 2 Worlds (Fi2W) is an award-winning news outlet and media training program that tells the stories of today’s immigrants. Fi2W empowers immigrant journalists and documents the construction of a new American identity. Over the past two decades, we have trained and mentored hundreds of immigrant journalists, helping them reach audiences on public radio and online news sites and advancing their careers.

Pitch us a reporting project on immigration and the economy:

Over the past six months, the U.S. administration’s aggressive new policies have targeted the immigrant workforce. Detentions and deportations of immigrants dominate many headlines in U.S. news coverage, yet overall framing often focuses primarily on what U.S. citizens stand to lose when immigrant workers — those who prepare our food, care for our elders, or build our infrastructure — leave.

At Feet in 2 Worlds, we know there’s more to the story when it comes to the intersection of immigration and the economy. We’re looking for a reporting fellow who’s interested in broadening the scope of our economic coverage from an immigrant lens — and centering immigrant voices in the process. Building upon the success of The Hustle, our 2025 podcast series about the ways immigrants navigate a changing economy, we’re interested in continuing to explore the intersections of immigration and the economy that challenge traditional media narratives.

We’re interpreting “economic coverage” broadly. We’re not limiting ourselves to stories on banking, inflation statistics, or the stock market. Instead, we’re defining the “economy” as the distribution of goods and services, whether formal or informal, home-grown or institutional. And we’re curious to hear stories that explore alternative economic systems, and topics like mutual aid, community lending, worker-owned co-ops, housing, or small immigrant-owned businesses.

In developing your pitch for Feet in 2 Worlds, we encourage you to include both a “big idea” direction and focus for your project, as well as a range of specific story ideas that could fill that project out.

Here are some guiding questions to think about when covering immigration and the economy from a Feet in 2 Worlds lens:

  • Where is mainstream media missing the mark when it comes to immigration and the economy? What does it misunderstand, misrepresent, or miss covering entirely?
  • What economic challenges are immigrants facing right now? What solutions are immigrant communities proposing or enacting? How do you compare and measure the efficacy of these solutions? Are these solutions applicable in other contexts? What can we learn from both the successes and the challenges?
  • What are the economies — the goods and services — that immigrants develop to fulfill the needs in their own communities? Are there specific businesses, services, and organizations that are filling these roles? How are these shaped by language, culture, faith, and geography?
  • How do immigrants and economies shape the layout of cities and public space? How does the need and distribution of things like housing, transportation, food, health care, education, and commerce affect not just the interior of individual businesses, but also on the streets, in parks and plazas, and across entire neighborhoods?
  • How are immigrant communities helping themselves and each other via mutual aid? What does that look like? What lessons on mutual aid do immigrants bring from their home countries?
